T 0 all wiiom it may concern Be it known that I, HARRY HERBERT PAYNE, a subject of the Kingdom of Great Britain, residing at 30 Bristol road, Bournbrook, Birmingham, in the county of IWan wick, England, have invented certain new and'useful Improvements in or Relating to Drop-Down Guns and Rifles, or" which, the following is a specification. 1
This invention comprises certain improvements in, or relating to, guns and rifles adapted to be broken at the breech for loading.
Accordin to the present invention I em ploy a slicing or longitudinally moving hammer adapted to be cocked or retracted by the operation of loading.
I also provide hammer actuating mechanism of a telescopic or extensible character adapted to be extended against the resistance of a spring. The opening of the breech causes one element of this telescopic mechanism connected with the hammerto come into a position in which it is retained by the, sear, and the closing of the gun displaces the other element of the mechanism against the resistance of the said spring. 7
Advantageously I form or'drilla pocket in the frame or body of the gun to accommodate the hammer actuating mechanism. This pocket serves as a guide both for the telescopic members and the tudinally moving hammer.
In order that this invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into practice, reference may be had to the appended explanatory sheet of drawings, upon which Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a partv of a gun embodying the present invention.

Fig. 3 shows the parts illustrated in F igs. 1 and 2, but with the hammer in the position which it assumes after it has been released .by the sear.
In a convenient embodiment of the present invention, a is the firing pin which is carried by a sliding or longitudinally moving hammer b which is actuated by mechanism of a telescopic or extensible character adapted to be extended against the resistance of a spring. A second spring 7, which I term the rebound spring, is located in alinement with, and adapted to be compressed by, the displacement of the telescopic element (1 in the cooking operation, while upon the opening of the; gun it is released and causes the telescopic elements and the hammer Z) to 1'3? bound into a position in which the hammer b is retained by the seata. i The hammer actuating mechanism above described is advantageously located, as shown, in a pocketor blind hole drilled longitudinally from the rear in the 'frame or body g of the gun. An aperture 7; may be provided extending from the said pocket to the upper face of said frame or, body,- t-hrough which aperture the cooking operation is effected. In this aperture a, leveri is located and pivoted at its front extremity to the frame. Thisflever has a depending projection j which is adapted to engage with a cam surface k provided on the fore part of the telescopic bolt. When the gun is open the said lever 2' projects above the upper face of. the frame. When in the operation of closing the gun the rear part of the barrel descends upon said upper face of the it'rame, this lever 71 is depressed with the result that its depending part is caused to forwardly actuate the one telescopic element d of the bolt against the resistance of the rebound spring 7 in front of the same, to thereby compress the hammer actuating spring 0.
The scar, which is controlled by a suit able spring provision Z is pivoted below the rear part of the hammer b and has an upward tooth m adapted to engage with a ratchet tooth or shoulder upon the hammer Z) so that in the above described cocking operation the hammer is retained by the sear in its retracted position. Upon actuation of the sear b 1 the tri er the hammer and strikes the cartridge. Upon opening the gun lever i rises, releasing the spring f which forces the telescopic members back into the position shown in Fig. 1 in which the hammer b is retained by the sear 0.
The hammer may comprise a vertically located block integral at its lower part with the one telescopic element and carrying at its other part the firing pin a. This block is adapted to be located in a cavity n in the rear face of the frame, the base of said cavity being adapted to function as a stop limiting the forward movement of the hammer."
The telescopic member integral with the hammer comprises a forwardly projecting integral boss upon the said block into which boss the rear extremity of a rod 0 is screwed. This rod is at its fore extremity provided with an enlargement p and is encircled by the coiled spring 6 which is located within the other telescopic member at which is in the form of asleeve having at its rear extremity an internal shoulder with which the rear ex tremity of the spring engages. Into the fore extremity of this sleeve a plug g is screwed. An aperture 1 is cut through this sleeve and laterall into the screwed plu said aperture terminating at the front with the surface is which is inclined downwardly. This surface forms the cam which is engaged b the lever 2' which is actuated upon the closing of the barrel.
' What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters atent is 1. In a gun adapted to be broken at the breech for loading, a breech piece, a hammer having a bolt mounted for axial movement in the breech piece, a spring on the bolt to cause the hammer to strike, a movable member arranged to compress said spring when said member is moved in one direction, a lever mounted in the breech piece and arranged for movement by the barrel when the gun is closed, to cause said movable member to compress said spring, and a second spring to move said movable member to move the hammer to cocked position.
2. In a gun adapted to be broken at the breech for loading, a breech piece, a hammer having a bolt mounted for axial movement in the breech piece, a spring on the bolt to cause the hammer to strike, a movable member arranged to compress said spring when said member is moved in one. direction, a lever mounted in the breech piece and arranged for movement by the barrel when the gun is closed, to cause said movable member to compress said spring,'a second spring to move said movable member to move the hammer to cocked position, and a spring actuated sear to hold the hammer in cocked position.
3.111 a gun adapted to'be broken at the breech for loading, a breech piece, a hammer having a bolt mounted for axial movement in the breech piece, a spring coacting with the bolt tocause the hammer to strike, a movable member arranged to compress said spring when said member is moved in' one directlon, means, arranged for movement bythe barrel when the gun is closed, to causesaid movable member to compress said spring, and means to move the hammer to cocked position when the gun is broken.
4. In a gun adapted to be broken at the breech for loading, hammer-actuating mechanism of a telescopic or extensible character, the members of which are adapted to be ex tended automatically, a resilient means coacting with said element in the operation of closing the breech, and a cockingvspring operative when the breech is opened.
