Abstract

1278625 Continuous casting NIPPON KOKAN KK 10 June 1969 [12 June 1968] 29475/69 Heading B3F [Also in Divisions C7 and F4] Inert gas, such as Ar or N 2 from a cylinder 3, is passed into molten metal in a ladle 1 and the metal flows from a hole 5 into a tundish 6 with a closed-end nozzle 7 having a passage or passages 8<SP>1</SP> directing metal downwardly beneath a flux (e.g. Portland cement) of melting-point 1000‹ to 1300‹ C. on the surface of metal in a mould 9; the horizontal distance between the ladle hole 5 and the nozzle 7 is 2-10 m. and the depth of metal in the tundish 6 is at least 350 mm. The gas passing into the metal, from a permeable member 2 or 2<SP>1</SP> or from both, evens the temperature and in the case of Al-killed steel floats out Al 2 O 3 inclusions. The flux in the mould besides acting as a lubricant is for keeping the atmosphere away from the metal surface and to collect aluminates. There is given the analysis of a steel to be cast. The arrangement of the tundish nozzle and mould is described in Specification 1,278,624.
