Nitrogen is obtained by absorbing the oxygen from air in a solution of ammonium sulphite, which becomes oxidized to ammonium sulphate, in a counter-current apparatus such as a series of spraying-towers, at a temperature of, preferably, 70-75‹ C. Ammonia carried away by the gas may be recovered. The nitrogen obtained may be used in the manufacture of cyanamides, and the ammonium sulphite may be obtained by the union of ammonia made from cyanamide, and sulphur dioxide made from pyrites, sulphur, gypsum, &c.
