Abstract

1278435 Chloroalkanes FARBWERKE HOECHST AG 1 Oct 1969 [8 Oct 1968] 48188/69 Heading C2C Chloroalkanes are prepared by reacting an olefin or chlorosubstituted olefin having from 2 to 4 carbon atoms with hydrogen chloride in the presence of a liquid catalyst comprising ferric chloride and/or antimony trichloride and water, to 80‹ C to 200‹ C under a pressure of from 0À2 at 20 atmospheres, continuously feeding the reactants to the catalyst and continuously distilling off the water. The hydrogen chloride and water may be added to the catalyst as an aqueous hydrochloric acid solution. Examples describe the preparation of isopropyl chloride, t-butyl chloride and 1,1-dichloropropane.
