Unsaturated esters are prepared by contacting a lower alkene and an organic carboxylic acid in the vapour phase, in admixture with oxygen with a catalyst comprising cupric chloride, a chloride of a Group VIII or IB metal and an alkali metal bromide at a temperature between 100‹ and 175‹ C. and a pressure between 0.1 and 10 atmospheres.
