1437832 Halocyclobutanones and preparation of cyclopropane carboxylic acid therefrom SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 11 April 1974 [16 April 1973] 18195/73 Heading C2C Halocyclobutanones of the general formula are prepared by treating the corresponding cyclobutane of the formula with a source of chlorine or bromine, e.g. a compound capable of generating chlorine or bromine in a chemically active form such as sulphuryl chloride or with elemental bromine. Cyclopropane carboxylic acids of the formula are prepared by heating a halocyclobutanone in the presence of a base and liberating the resultant acid salt by reaction with a suitable acid, e.g. an inorganic base such as sodium carbonate and an aqueous mineral acid such as hydrochloric acid.
