Abstract

1277610 Tensioning bolts BURMEISTER & WAIN'S MASKIN-OG SKIBSBYGGERI AS 8 Dec 1969 [10 Dec 1968] 59818/69 Heading F2H A bolt tensioning arrangement particularly for securing a cylinder cover for an internal combustion engine comprises a number of hydraulic pistons 8 and bores 4 provided in a nut 2 and associated ring 6, the bores having inlets capable of being connected to a source of pressure such that after tightening the nut and ring against a surface 3 the pressure exerted by the liquid causes the pistons to lift the nut away from the ring thereby tensioning the bolt. Shims 13 may be inserted to retain the nut and ring separated and the hydraulic pressure then released. The pistons which have annular seals 9 are inserted into the bores in the nut through openings which are closed by plugs 5. Alternatively two pistons acting in opposite directions may be positioned in bores in the nut, the liquid being introduced between them so that the lower one bears on a ring adjacent the surface 3. Instead of shims 13 an outer nut may be screwed on the nut itself and is tightened against the surface to retain the bolt tensioned after the pressure has been released. In addition to ensure that the bores in the nut 2 and ring 6 are correctly aligned pins may extend from the nut into the ring to locate them in position.
