Abstract

1458833 Tensioning bolts J PIROSKA and E RUMMELHOFF 20 Dec 1973 [27 Dec 1972] 59139/73 Heading F2H A screw bolt 2 which extends from and cooperates with a base surface is tensioned by means of a device comprising a cylinder 4 slidably surrounding and receiving a threaded piston 3 interposed between the surface and a nut 5. The bolt is subjected to tensile strain when fluid under pressure is supplied to an inlet 18 so as to move the piston 3 upwardly and hence elongate the bolt 2. The nut 5 initially abuts the cylinder 4, as shown, there being a gap c between the piston 3 and the nut 5 since the cylinder 4 is longer than the piston 3. The nut 5 moves relative to the cylinder as the bolt stretches but the elongation is less than the distance c. In this tensioned state the nut 5 is turned until it once again loosely abuts the cylinder 4, the source of pressure then being removed. Sealing edges, which as described accommodate "O"-rings 15, 15<SP>1</SP>, are situated substantially midway along the piston and cylinder and are disposed in respective planes that are substantially a common plane and are substantially perpendicular to the bolt axis and co-operate with a corresponding cylindrical surface of the piston and the cylinder. The radially outermost surface of the piston 3 and the radially innermost surface of the cylinder 4 comprise frusto-conical and right cylindrical portions as shown and, as described, together with convex abutting surfaces of the nut 5 and cylinder 4, enable the device to tolerate a degree of angular deviation or misalignment. The cylinder 4 may be angularly keyed to the piston 3 by a pin 16 which engages in an axial groove 17.
