Abstract

1390012 Apparatus for applying predetermined tensions to bolts REYROLLE PARSONS Ltd 20 March 1972 [21 Dec 1970] 60632/70 Heading F2H Apparatus for tensioning a bolt 3 of a bolted flange joint using closely spaced bolts 2, 3, 4, e.g. of a steam turbine casing, comprises a bridge member 8 supported via respective hydraulic piston and cylinder assemblies 9, 14 and 10, 15 on two or more supports 11, 12 shaped to transmit a supporting force between the bridge member 8 and a flange 1 through which the bolt passes whilst an adjacent bolt 4, with or without its associated nut 7, is in position, means for supplying fluid pressure to the cylinders, and a member 13 engageable by the bolt 3 to transmit a tensile force from the bridge member to the bolt 3. Each support 11, 12 is hollow so that it can stand over an adjacent bolt 2 or 4. The tension member 13 can be screwed on to the end of bolt 3, and passes through the bridge member to a retaining nut 20. The pistons may have sealing rings in circumferential grooves (Fig. 4c, not shown) or may carry synthetic rubber discs on their upper faces (Fig. 3c, not shown), or a flexible bag connected to the pressure fluid supply may occupy the cylinder above the piston (Fig. 5c, not shown). A modified tension member 13 (Fig. 5b) has an internal thread 26 to engage a threaded boss 27 on the bridge member 8. Another tension member (Fig. 3a, not shown) has a flanged head to engage in a recess in the bridge member.
