The filament may comprise a wire 3 preformed into loops 5 and fed by a spoked wheel 6 to the needles. The needles draw the loops through the last course. Alternatively a thermoplastic yarn which sets rigid when cool is heated prior to knitting. A heated rail 20 is mounted on the yarn path above the yarn guide 27.
