Abstract
1276074 Assembling force fits; jointing P & O PILGRIM VALVE Ltd 30 March 1971 8156/71 Headings B3U and B3V [Also in Divisions B4 and F2] A propeller 12 is mounted on the tapered end 11 of a shaft 10 by an interposed sleeve 15 with a tapered bore 16 force fitted on to the shaft, there being a layer 14 of hardenable composition, set at above atmospheric pressure between the sleeve 15 and the hub 13 of the propeller. The tapered mating surfaces may have axial and circumferential grooves 31, 32. The layer 14 may be of epoxy resin about 2 mm. thick between surfaces formed with left- and righthand screw threads 17 ... 20. Force fitting of the sleeve 15 on the tapered end 14 may include degreasing with carbon tetrachloride after the mating surfaces are polished to a 7 micron finish. To push the sleeve on to the shaft there may be on the shaft a nut 24 carrying a tube 26 inflatable to urge an annular piston 27 against the sleeve. Movement of the sleeve along the shaft may be measured with a dial gauge. The sleeve may be removed by filling the grooves 31, 32 with water under pressure. The sleeve may be refitted and repolished several times until a well distributed bedding contact of approximately 85% of the area is achieved. Insertion of the layer 14 of epoxy resin may be done with the propeller rotational axis vertical. The ends of the space for the layer 14 may be blocked and pipes 47 connected to vents at the lower end. The pipes 47 lead via a valve 52 to a pump 49 connected to a cylinder of compressed nitrogen or air. The space is first filled with carbon tetrachloride, vents at the top end then being plugged at 60 except one to which is connected a pressure gauge 61. The pressure is then raised to 500 p.s.i. The carbon tetrachloride is then removed and its volume measured, e.g. in a collecting bucket at 54. The space is then filled with resin from a bucket 55, the space plugged at 60 and the pressure gauge replaced. The resin is then pressurized by a grease gun 53, and with all valves 52, 57, 58 closed is left to set under pressure.
