Abstract

1,274,909. Gettering. S.A.E.S. GETTERS S.p.A. 17 Nov., 1969 [23 Nov., 1968], No. 56079/69. Heading H1D. A getter pump comprises a non-evaporating getter material 28 attached to a strip-shaped electrically resistive substrate 27 and connections 30, 31 enabling the passage of an electric current through said substrate so that, in operation of the pump, the substrate produces heat activating the getter material. In the arrangement shown, two strips 26 and 29 coated with getter material 28 except on the margins and provided with slits at 6 mm. intervals are folded adjacent the slits to form pleated circular configurations which are supported in annular grooves in retaining members 20, 25 and 24 mounted on three rods (two only, 14 and 15, shown) with the aid of flanged washers 17 and 18 welded to the rods and heat and electrically insulating sleeves 19. Heating current is supplied through leads 30 and 31 welded to the strips which are connected in series by a conductor 33. The strips are made of a material having a resistivity of 1 to 200 microhm-cms. measured at 20‹ C., e.g. stainless steel or a nickel-chromium alloy. The getter material may be an alloy of 5 to 30%, preferably 16%, Al with the balance Zr, attached in powder form to the strips by pressing or rolling. The pump may be permanently installed as an appendage to a klystron or image intensifier tube.
