Abstract
1509102 Electric resistance heating NATIONAL ELEMENT Inc 29 April 1976 [1 May 1975] 17463/76 Heading H5H An electrical resistance heating element has a plurality of interconnected rigid heating conductors 31, 32 passing through aligned holes 22, 23 in insulating, supporting plates (15, Fig. 1, not shown) 17, 18, the plates being separated by spacers 25, the interconnected conductors forming a meander current path and the holes 22, 23, being arranged in laterally spaced (concentric) circular paths (Figs. 3, 5, not shown). Adjacent the terminal, ends of the conductors are joined by short rods 40 welded to them; the distal ends may be similarly joined but preferably the conductors are U-shaped rods. Four conductors 41, 41, 42, 42 are longer than the others. Two, 41, 41 are joined via wider intermediate rods 45 to screwed terminal rods 48; the other two 42, 42 are interconnected by a rod 43 to complete the desired current path. The element is preferably inserted in a metal tube 11 with a fixing flange 13. Additional nonconducting plates 16, 19 protect opposite ends of the heating assembly and prevent engagement with walls of the tube 11; plates 50, 55 support the terminals in the tube 11 and are held between washers 53, 56 welded to rods 48. Chamfered sides 24 of holes 22 increase radiation from conductors 31, 32.
