Heading H5H. An electric heater for the heating of a gaseous medium comprises a winding of heating wire formed into a substantially two-dimensional structure of meander shape or zig-zag shape without any wire portions crossing one another, the heating wire structure being secured to at least one electrically insulating supporting member having a plurality of openings through which individual meander portions or zig-zag portions of the heating wire structure extend, the arrangement being such that the plane of the heating wire structure is perpendicular to the direction of flow of the gaseous medium. In one arrangement, Fig. 1, a zig-zag heater ribbon 13 is led through slots in inner support members 11<SP>1</SP> and abuts outer members 11. The members 11 and 11<SP>1</SP> are connected together by side supports 12 which are secured to a housing 16 by screws, bolts &c. in apertures 15. The ends of the ribbon 13 are connected to terminals 14. The heater may comprise six ribbons 13 mounted side by side and connected to individual terminals for switching purposes. Larger units may be constructed by mounting two or more heaters one above the other (Fig. 3, not shown). In an alternative circular arrangement (Fig. 4, not shown), the inner and outer support members 11 and 11<SP>1</SP> are bent to form two concentric rings. In Fig. 5 the ribbon 51 is bent to a comb-shaped profile, the " teeth " passing through slots 53 in a support member 52<SP>1</SP> and being held in position by a further support member 52. Two such arrangements may be combined back to back with the two sets of " teeth " pointing away from each other or face to face with the two sets of " teeth " pointing towards each other (Figs. 6 and 7, not shown). In Fig. 10 the winding 81 is held by two slotted plates 82 and 83. In Fig. 11 the winding 111 is held in slots in two mica plates 112, 112<SP>1</SP> and abuts additional support plates 113, 113<SP>1</SP> which may be of metal covered on one side with mica. Either of the last two arrangements may comprise a number of windings mounted side by side
