Abstract
1,274,174. Shielded enclosures. ACIERIES REUNIES DE BURBACH - EICH - DUDELANGE S.A. ARBED, and GRADEL S.A. 19 April, 1971 [17 March, 1970], No. 23838/71. Heading B4Q. A transfer port assembly in the wall of a shielded enclosure through which an elongated object of regular convex section can be passed lengthwise comprises an air-lock 6 and two removable, supple, variable-aperture deformable seals 11, II<SP>1</SP>. The seals 11, 11<SP>1</SP> can be in the form of hyperbolical or cylindrical revolution surfaces, one normal cross-section of which is rotated with respect to another to obtain an aperture of the required diameter (Figs. 1a to 1d, not shown) or can be inflatable or elastic seals (Figs. 2a, 2b, 3a, 3b, not shown). The assembly is intended for the transfer of an elongated object, the length of which is a multiple of that of the air-lock 6, from a first enclosure 7 to a second enclosure 8, the gas pressures or contamination conditions of which may be different. To isolate the air-lock 6, removable closure assemblies 9, 10, 11, 12 and 9<SP>1</SP>, 10<SP>1</SP>, 11<SP>1</SP>, 121 are secured to the air-lock springs by means of remote locking systems 13. Each closure assembly includes a removable flange 9, 9<SP>1</SP> tightened onto the air-lock chamfered opening by means of a seal. This flange 9, 9<SP>1</SP> is fitted with a sealbearing body 10, 10<SP>1</SP> having at least one seal 11, 11<SP>1</SP>. Finally, a hinged cover 12, 12<SP>1</SP> on the body 10, 10<SP>1</SP> can statically close the transfer port assembly. The removable nature of the closure assemblies simplifies the replacement of a worn or faulty closure assembly. Conduits 15, 16 are provided for controlling the pressure in the air-lock 6. During the entire transfer process of objects which are several metres long through an air-lock of a length of only some tens of centimetres, the two enclosures 7, 8 are never in direct communication. By controlling the air-lock pressure during the different transfer sequences, one is able to direct any pressure leakages in the direction dictated by safety. If the seals 11, 11<SP>1</SP> are of the type which can be completely closed when objects are not being transferred, the covers 12, 12<SP>1</SP> can be dispensed with.
