Abstract

1,273,039. Soldering metallic parts. ROLLSROYCE Ltd. 17 Dec., 1969, No. 61509/69. Heading B3R. A method of joining at least two metallic parts such as two halves of a gas turbine rotor blade 15, 16 comprises providing a fusible alloy layer between the parts which have at one end a portion of greater surface area than the remainder of the part, placing said parts in a flexible metallic foil bag 13 which is evacuated to effect clamping of the parts and immersing the bag into a liquid bath such as molten salt heated to effect joining of said parts, the root portions of the blades having a large surface area being oriented to the bottom of the bath so that they are subjected to a greater hydrostatic pressure than the remainder of the article. The bag 13 may be stainless steel foil and the bath is heated by electrodes 25, the salt or salts of the bath being chosen in accordance with the required temperature for fusing said layer. The invention may also be applied to honeycomb structural members backed by metal sheets.
