Abstract
1,272,737. Copper base alloy. AMERICAN SMELTING & REFINING CO. March 13, 1970, No. 12317/70. Headings C7A and C7D. An alloy consists of in per cent by weight: - Al 1-1À5 Mn 17-22 Zn 17-22 Cu 58-60À5 Alternatively the alloy may consist of: Al 1-1À5 Mn 17-22 Zn 17-22 Ni 3-6 Cu balance, provided that Cu + Ni is from 59-61À5. The alloys have good yield strength and ductility, and a silvery appearance especially when polished. The liquidus temperature may be below 1850‹ C. The minimum tensile strength, yield strength and elongation may be respectively 60, 000 psi 30, 000 psi and 20% in 2 inches. The alloy may be prepared by melting the copper (with the nickel where included), adding manganese, adding borax to remove surface oxide, adding the zinc and finally the aluminium in small pieces without stirring. A clay-graphite on silicon carbide crucible may be used.
