Abstract

1,272,012. Container couplings. CRANE FRUEHAUF TRAILERS Ltd. 27 May, 1969 [24 May, 1968], No. 26734/69. Heading E2B. A device for coupling a container to a supporting structure comprises fastening means movably carried by a supporting structure 30 and including a head portion 106, adjusting means for adjusting the distance of the head portion from the supporting structure, independent operating means for rotating and fastening the fastening means between lock and unlock positions, and shear block means 112 disposed adjacent the fastening means for reception in a portion of an associated container. As shown in Fig. 3, the coupling mechanism comprises a shank 102 having a head 106 and screwed to receive a nut 120 formed with a groove 130 in which are engaged plates 132, 134 so that rotation of the nut causes the shank to be raised or lowered according to the thickness of the corner casting 180 of a container. A block 112 for transmitting shear forces between containers and supporting structure is carried by the shank 102. After raising the shank to an appropriate distance above the structure, the shank is rotated by a handle 140 to bring the head 106 into a fastening position, and the shank is then lowered as necessary by the nut 120. The handle 140 is held in position by a latch 160. In a modification, the shear block is fixed, and the shank is manually raised after slackening of the nut and moved to the fastening position thereof after which the nut is rotated to apply a clamping force between the head 160 and a container corner casting.
