Abstract

A hammer comprising a head, one or two striking faces removably secured to the head, and a handle, the head having a tapering hole and the handle at one end being correspondingly shaped so that it is fixed in the head by a wedging action is characterized in that the head is substantially cylindrical and comprises an insert within a plastics casing of substantially cylindrical external form, the hole passing through the casing and the insert. As illustrated the casing 10 is tubular and is preferably a length cut from an extruded plastics tube. The insert 11 is of metal e.g. iron, aluminium or zinc alloy, or of a plastics material of greater density than the material of the casing. One or more wedges may be driven into the head end of the handle, which is of wood so as to move more tightly and wedge the handle in the hole. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) the casing is a moulding formed around an insert which is annular in section normal to the axis of the hole, and in this embodiment the striking faces are secured to the head by means of screwed threaded projections thereon engaging in screw threaded blind bores in the plastics moulding. The striking faces 14 may be of plastics, rubber or soft metal, and may be replaced by faces which are domed or cone-shaped.
