Abstract

A hammer comprises a head 10 moulded or cast from a lightweight material, such as plastics or aluminium, and having a cavity 13 filled with a material, such as metal shot 14 or mercury, the ends of the head being provided with detachable striking faces 21. The striking faces which may be of plastics, copper or rawhide, are screwed into inserts 11 secured in the head by their own resilience or by adhesive. A hole normally closed by a cap 15 is provided in the head for filling the cavity with shot and also providing access to a screw 17 for fixing the head to a handle 16. In a modification (Fig. 2) in which the head is cast in light metal, an integral stem (37) is provided to which a handle may be attached; the stem may be hollow and provided with serrations on its inside surface in order to hold a wooden handle. Alternatively, the stem may be cast in the form of a handle.
