Abstract

1,271,724. Crimping. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA FABRIK A.G. 12 Sept., 1969 [13 Sept., 1968], No. 45115/69. Heading D1F. Synthetic yarns, filaments or tows are crimped by passing them into a chamber 15 through orifice 17, and through a vibrating tube 4 through which heated gas, at a temperature sufficient to plasticize the material, flows after admission via inlet 5, a second chamber 16, at the remote end of the tube 4, being preferably tuned to resonance with the vibrations of the tube 4, which are created by the gas flow. The second chamber 16 may comprise radial slots 19 (Fig. 1), transverse or inclined slots (Figs. 3, 4, not shown), or an abrupt widening 22 followed by a tapered divergence 23 (Fig. 5). Suitable materials for crimping include polyamides, e.g. nylon 6, 6.6, or 6.10, polyesters, e.g. polyethylene terephthalate, polyethylene, isotactic polypropylene, and a copolymer of acrylonitrile (93.5%), methyl acrylate (5.5%) and allylsulphonic acid (1%). Suitable gases include nitrogen, carbon dioxide, steam and air. Means for cooling the yarn after processing (Fig. 6) comprises a velvet covered roller 25 and a polished cooling jacket 26 cooled by a coolant 9, the yarn then being wound on a reel 10.
