Abstract

1,271,696. Valves. NUPRO CO. 30 June, 1969 [31 July, 1968], No. 32859/69. Heading F2V. A valve has a body 10 with an annular seat 26 and a screwed stem 28 rotatable by a handle 30, the stem tip having a coating of P.T.F.E. which is partially transferred to the seat during repeated closing of the valve. The handle 30 has a span of approximately one to three times that of the outer threads on the bonnet 40 so that it provides sufficient pressure to close the valve while preventing accidental unscrewing of the bonnet. The coating has a thickness of three to five thousandths of an inch and the stem is of naval brass having a hardness in the range Rockwell B 88 to 90 and a tensile strength of 80,000 to 85,000 lbs/sq. inch. Mating faces 60, 62 prevent gross leakage along the screw thread if a seal 52 of P.T.F.E. located between phosphor bronze washers 48, 50 should fail.
