Abstract

1,271,551. Diaphragm pumps. A. PIERBURG AUTO-UND LUFTFAHRT GERATEBAU K.G. Sept. 16, 1969 [Oct.23, 1968], No.45668/69. Heading F1A. A diaphragm pump comprises upper and lower parts separated by a diaphragm 1, the upper part comprising a cover secured by means of a screw 33 to an intermediate housing 6 having an end wall 8 which with a valve plate 5 divides the upper part of the pump into a suction chamber 2, a working chamber 3 and a pressure chamber 4. The end wall 8 has a port 9, the lower lip 9a of which bears sealingly against the valve plate S around a corresponding aperture 5a therein, which is closeable by a flap valve 26. The delivery valve comprises a spring-loaded disc 261 which seats over a second aperture 5b in the valve plate 5. The inlet 28 and outlet 27 connections are attached to the cover and the intermediate housing respectively. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown) a relief valve in the form of a spring-loaded ball is mounted in the suction chamber 2 over an aperture in the end wall 8 between the suction and pressure chambers. In a further modification, the relief valve is replaced by a spring-loaded membrane to absorb pressure fluctuations in the pressure chamber. In another embodiment, Fig. 5, an intermediate valve plate 15 between the end wall 8 and the valve plate 5 forms the pressure chamber 4 and a delivery chamber 18, communication therebetween being via a spring-loaded ball valve 16 controlled by a membrane 17 movable by pressure fluctuations in the delivery chamber 18. In another modification, a disc valve between the pressure chamber and the delivery chamber is acted upon by a spring-loaded membrane to close the valve and prevent any flow of liquid when the pressure in the pressure chamber drops below a certain value.
