1,273,845. Diaphragm pumps. SOC: ANON POUR L'EQUIPMENT ELECTRIQUE DES VEHICULES SEV MARCHAL. Jan. 14, 1970 [Jan. 15, 1969], No.1786/70. Heading F1A. In a diaphragm pump comprising a pumping diaphragm 12 and suction and delivery chambers 14 and 19, the delivery volume and pressure is regulated by an orifice 18 between the chambers which is controlled by a diaphragm 25. Liquid is passed from the suction chamber 14 to the delivery chamber 19, through valves 15 and 20, on reciprocation of the diaphragm 12 by lever 4 and spring 9, and thence to the outlet pipe 33 via valve 23. Diaphragm 25 is pressed by a spring 27 against the orifice 18, such that at an excess delivery pressure the diaphragm is displaced and allows fuel to be spilled back into the chamber 14; vapourization of liquid in the delivery chamber or spout has a similar effect. Increase in pressure in the suction chamber due to vapourization therein is overcome by using a diaphragm spring 9 which will be unaffected by the pressure increase. In another embodiment Fig. 2 (not shown) valve 23 is replaced by a ball valve and the orifice is controlled by a peg carried by a spring-loaded control diaphragm; one arm of a two armed pivotally mounted lever, whose other arm is connected to the control diaphragm, acts to close the ball-valve when the recycle orifice is opened.
