Abstract
1,270,656. Food colours. UNILEVER Ltd. 24 April, 1969 [25 April, 1968], No. 19671/68. Heading A2B. [Also in Division C4] A food (e.g. sausage, carbonated drinks, icecream, jam) is coloured with 8-acetamido-2- (azo-benzene-4-sulphonic acid)-1-naphthol-3, 6- disulphonic acid or a salt (e.g. Na) thereof. The dye may be prepared by reacting sulphanilic acid, sodium nitrite and hydrochloric acid in the presence of sodium carbonate and water, reacting the resultant diazonium salt with 8- acetamido-1-naphthol-3, 6-disulphonic acid in the presence of sodium carbonate and water, adding ammonia to the reaction mixture, acidifying with acetic acid and heating the mixture, precipitating the dye with salt solution and purifying the dye with the use of more salt solution. Alternatively, the dye may be prepared by reacting the diazonium salt prepared as above with 8-acetamido-1-naphthol-3, 6-disulphonic acid in the presence of sodium hydroxide, neutralising the mixture with hydrochloric acid, evaporating the mixture to give the dye which is purified by recrystallising in ethanol.
