Abstract
1424785 isomerized hop extract BUSH BOAKE ALLEN Ltd 15 June 1973 [15 March 2 Oct 1972] 28540/73 and 28542/73 Divided out of 1423129 Heading C6E A solution of a hop extract containing α-acids dissolved in a mixture of a water-immiscible solvent and a water-miscible solvent (defined) is contacted with an oxide, hydroxide, or carbonate of an alkaline earth metal &c. to form the α-acid salts, and maintained for a time and at a temperature sufficient to form the corresponding iso-α- acid salts. The water-miscible solvent may be a lower alcohol and the immiscible solvent a liquid hydrocarbon constituting 60-40 wt per cent of the mixture. The metal is preferably Ca, Zn, or Mg with preferably a trace of water present when Mg is used. The extract may also contain #-acids and hop oils. Free iso-α-acids and (3-acids may be recovered as a solution in the immiscible solvent, e.g. by adding sufficient water to form two separate layers, followed by strong acid to release free iso-α-acid in the water-immiscible layer which is separated, the solution being evaporated to give a crude isomerized extract, or contacted with aqueous alkali at a pH sufficient to transfer the iso-α-acids to the aqueous phase as the salt without transferring the #-acids.
