Abstract
1,270,616. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. COLEMAN CABLE & WIRE CO. 11 June, 1970, No. 28339/70. Heading B5K. [Also in Division H1] Three electrical conductors or other elongated members 16, 18, 20 coated with resin such as PVC or polyvinyl acetate are carried from supply reels 10, 12, 14 which may be mounted on a common axle 22 through straightening rollers 26 (28, Fig. 2, not shown) and locating rollers 32, 34 into a converging chamber 40. A jet of hot gas e.g. air is directed through a hole 50 at right angles to the conductors and softens the portion of the resin coating of each conductor adjacent the other conductors. The conductors then pass between spacers 54, 56 which press them together and the fused conductors then pass to a take-up drum 60. The hot air after passing the conductors passes out of the chamber 40 around the incoming conductors to preheat them. The conductors may each have a copper core and may be of different sizes. The distance between the spacers 54, 56 may be varied to allow for different sizes of conductors and the cross-section of each conductor is substantially unchanged by the joining.
