930,434. Flat strip cables. SPECTRA-STRIP WIRE & CABLE CORPORATION. Oct. 3, 1961, No. 35618/61. Class 36. A flat strip cable is made by joining together by a solvent a plurality of insulated conductors. P.V.C.-insulated conductors 20 are each led through guide apertures 36 and 44 and then around screws 52, the centre one of which is mounted on a slide 48 adjusted so as to provide sufficient tension to straighten the conductors. The conductors are then brought closer together by apertures 70 and aligned in a horizontal plane by passing over and under rods 74, being pressed together by a spring-loaded member 78. The contiguous conductors are then passed through a bath 88 of a solvent, tetrahydrofuran, between a roller 102 and rod 103 mounted on a vertically-movable slide 92 by means of which they may be removed from the solvent. As the conductors leave the solvent bath 88 they pass around a drying drum 22 on to which warm air is blown. The composite strip conductor is then taken over a pulley system to a take-up drum. The time for which the conductors are immersed in the solvent is adjusted so that the join between conductors is tangential and they may easily be separated as required during installation, e.g. of a cable harness or like system.
