Abstract

In a crimping apparatus yarn 1 is supplied at constant speed as by feed rollers 2a, 2b, passes through an ejection nozzle 3 whereby it is projected onto a rotating crimping member 5 whence crimped yarn is removed and taken-up. -The nozzle, Fig. 2, comprises a yarn guide tube 8, within which an ejection tube 7 is adjustably threaded, and a main heating tube 9 the bore of which is connected by a guide path 12 and connecting path 13 to a supplementary heating medium path 11, formed by the annular space between tubes 7 and 9, into which compressed hot air or (superheated) steam is injected through a supply conduit 10. Yarns may be separately ejected by a series of nozzles 3 supplied by and pivotally mounted on a common hot air &c. conduit 15 so that movement of each nozzle to and from its operative position in relation to the member 5 simultaneously opens and closes the connection between conduit 15 and the nozzle. Adjustable, auxiliary heater(s) for the injected air &c. may be housed in conduit 15. The crimping member 5 has an external surface wholly or partially provided with protuberances, such as needles, into the spaces between which the yarn is pressed by fluid pressure and thereby deformed into a crimped configuration. The member may be a cylinder or an endless belt. Take-up apparatus comprises a pair of cooperating conical rollers 6a, 6b between the nip of which the crimped yarn passes at a position which correctively adjusts the speed of yarn withdrawal (according to variation in yarn shrinkability) and therefore the position whereat the yarn leaves the crimping member so as to tend to maintain such position constant. Yarn cooling-apparatus 17 comprises slidably superposed, perforated plates 18a, 18b, through which passage of cooling air is adjusted according to their relative disposition.
