Abstract
126,947. Hartmann, J. F. G. P. May 11, 1918, [Convention date]. Electro-magnetic apparatus. -Apparatus for producing an electrically - conducting fluid jet comprises a jet nozzle connected to a channel j arranged in the field of a magnet f and provided with electrodes i so arranged as to enable an electric current to traverse the liquid across the direction of the magnetic lines of force. A receiver for the liquid may be inserted between the slit j and the jet. Ribs may be provided in the channel j to restrict the path of the current. A number of channels j may be used in series both electrically and hydrodynamically. In another form, a number of channels are arranged in series electrically and in parallel hydrodynamically. In another form, the channel has the form of a flat tube bent to the shape of a ring and arranged in a rotating field. In another form, a coil carrying an alternating current is arranged on a core of laminated iron, and the liquid passes through a hollow ring arranged on the core co-axially with the coil. The conductive continuity of the liquid may be broken in its circuit by its being divided into a shower of drops.
