Abstract
1,268,178. Tundishes. CONCAST A.G. 21 Sept., 1970 [1 June, 1970], No. 44928/70. Heading F4B. A preferably cylindrical tundish 1 is provided with two angularly spaced pouring devices, each comprising an orifice 2 or 2<SP>1</SP>, a slide nozzle 3 or 3<SP>1</SP> and a pouring tube 8 or 8<SP>1</SP>, which are alternatively rotated to an operating position above a continuous casting mould 7, to allow the device in the inoperative position to be replaced. End bearing rings, or encircling girth rings (not shown) may be used to rotate the tundish. Steel from ladle 14 is charged to the tundish through opening 16. An overflow 18 is provided in the end wall of the tundish. The angular spacing 11 of the pouring devices, which is over 90 degrees and preferably about 100 degrees is not less than the angular extent 17 of charging opening 16 which is preferably about 80 degrees. Examples of the tundish dimensions are given. A retractable launder (Fig. 3, not shown) may be provided to deflect metal teemed from ladle 14 into charging opening 16. Electric or gas fired means (Fig. 4, not shown) may be provided to preheat the inoperative pouring device. The ladle 14 may be moved horizontally when the tundish 1 is rotated to continue to charge steel through the opening in its alternative position 16<SP>1</SP>, and/or a system of retractable launders (not shown) may be used to deflect the steel flow to the position 16<SP>1</SP>. The tundish may be liftable and lowerable.
