Abstract

1,268,047. Tobacco-smoke filter manufacture. MOLINS MACHINE CO. Ltd. and N. W. JACKSON. 13 June, 1969 [14 June, 1968; 1 Nov., 1968], Nos. 28606/68 and 51802/68. Heading A2C. An apparatus for depositing loose filter material 7 into gaps between spaced apart filter plugs 5 carried by a conveyer, comprises a screen having apertures in it which are in register with the said gaps, and means to supply the material 7 into or through the said apertures so that the latter guide the material 7 into the gaps as the stream of plugs 5 and the screen move in unison. As shown the plugs 5 are carried on a continuous paper web 4 which is transported through a central trough 2 of the apparatus by a garniture tape 3 constrained into a U-shaped cross-section. The screen is formed by links 10 of a chain 8, the links 10 being formed so as to act as funnels 11 to guide the material 7 (fed into them from a hopper shoot 6) through the apertures between successive links. In another embodiment, the screen takes the form of a belt (18) provided with longitudinally spaced oval-shaped apertures, ploughs (13) above the belt (18) and a guard (14) above and around the sides of the belt (18) guide the material 7 through the apertures. In a further embodiment, a series of funnelled guide elements (104), which interlock and form connected links of an endless chain, act as the screen and guide therefor. A vibrating conveyer (112) feed for the material 7 is also disclosed in connection with this latter embodiment.
