In a chain comprising pairs of flat outer links 1 connected together by cylindrical pins 3, alternating with pairs of flat inner links 2 connected together by pins 4 having concave bearing surfaces to receive the pins 3, which extend through clearance holes in the inner links 2, the pins 3 are alternately on the leading side and the lagging side of the pins 4, and the distance A between adjacent pins 4 is greater than the distance B between adjacent pins 3. Thus only every second hinge is engaged by a sprocket tooth and in all cases the pin 3 of the hinge is engaged, so that there is no tendency for the pins 4 to be loosened from the links 2. The invention is applicable to single row or multi row chains.
