Abstract
126,684. Rudge - Whitworth, Ltd., Pugh, J. V., and Pountney, F. Feb. 10, 1917. Projectile fuses.-Relates to percussion fuses of the kind in which the movement of a centrifugal locking-bolt out of engagement with an inertia pellet is retarded during the period of acceleration of the projectile, and consists in providing a frictional or like obstruction in the path of the bolt, the contour and arrangement of the parts being such as to result in an intermittent or escapement motion. In the fuse shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a centrifugal bolt g, which normally locks an inertia pellet c<4>, has lateral teeth g<8> adapted to coact with teeth v<6> at the sides of a slot in a rotatably-mounted washer v<3>. This washer is normally locked by an inertia detent p', but on discharge of the projectile, it is free to oscillate as the bolt g moves radially outwards. The escapement action as the teeth g<8> slide over the teeth v<6> effects the required retardation of the bolt. In a modification, the bolt has a series of alternatelyspaced teeth, coacting with a pivoted anchor escapement member. The arrangement may be such that the inertia pellet itself receives an intermittent rotational movement. Specification 126,387 is referred to.
