Abstract

1,266,840. Friction clutch. CARL HURTH MASCHINEN-UND ZAHNRADFABRIK. 19 Jan., 1971 [16 Feb., 1970; 8 July, 1970; 14 Sept., 1970], No. 2526/71. Headings F2C and F2L. Engagement of a friction clutch or, as shown, a double friction clutch connecting gear-wheels to a shaft is effected initially by an axially sliding sleeve 16 which moves pressure plates 17 or 18 axially to lightly engage the respective multiplate clutch (20), (21), Fig. 1 (not shown), causing relative rotation between the plate 17 or 18 and a flange 15 fast with the shaft so that balls 30 in recesses 24, 27 in the flange and plate cam them apart to complete the engagement of the clutch. With symmetrical recesses the clutches are bi-directional rather than unidirectional as shown. The plates 17, 18 are drawn axially together by hairpin springs (31), Fig. 4 (not shown), engaging studs 32 on the plates and passing through openings 37 in the sleeve 16 which is formed with internal ramp surfaces (46), (35) on lugs (38), (39) which cooperate with parallel surfaces (46), (48) on lugs (44) on the plates to move them axially and to allow relative turning for full clutch engagement. A spring detent 56 holds the sleeve 16 in its neutral position and biases it in its end positions. Again, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), the plates 17 and 18 urge the friction discs against end plates (70), (70<SP>1</SP>) which are spring biased against stops towards the plates to provide clutch slip on overload. Relative turning between the plates 17, 18 and flange 15 is limited by pins (77) engaging recesses (79). The sleeves 16 are moved axially by a cam (106), Fig. 8 (not shown), on a shaft (103) and engaging with play in a groove (108) in a control fork (101) slidable on a fixed rod (110). The cam carries a spring biased plunger (112) engaging a narrow groove in the bottom of groove (108) and causing the two to move together for initial clutch engagement and then to allow the sleeve to move independently of the cam for the final clutch engagement.
