Movable-abutment type; back-pressure, reducing; valve-gear.-In a reversible rotary engine of the type comprising intermeshing gear-wheel pistons a, b having helical teeth, which may be divided into oppositely disposed adjacent sections as shown in Fig. 1, the inlet passages for the motive fluid are adapted to serve relief outlets when reversing. Valves h, h<1>, i, i<1> are cperated so that motive fluid from ports m is delivered through inlets c, c<1> for one direction of working and through inlets d, d<1> for reversing, exhaust taking place through outlets c, c<1>. A port f or g leading to the atmosphere is uncovered hy the valve, which for the moment is closing the steam port m, so that the passages c, c<1> or d, d<1>, which are not in use for the admission of motive fluid, act as relief ducts for the escape of compressed fluid on the side of the intermeshed teeth opposite to the admission side. The passages c<1>, d<1> may be dispensed with.
