Abstract

13,819. Powell, E. C., Macarthur, C., and Smith, F. July 5. Annular-chamber type of rotary engines. A non-reversible , engine is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The abutment c rotates on a trunnion through which steam is admitted so as to pass through ports n, o to the working chamber a. A space q is provided to allow steam to enter the chamber a when the recess k is in the chamber b. The abutment is packed by an adjustable strip r, The disk or pinion e carries one or more vanes f which travel over the surfaces of the inwardly-extending parts d. The piston and abutment are of the same diameter and are geared together by equal spur-wheels j. Exhaust takes place at s. A reversible engine is shown in Fig. 4 in which two exhaust valves t are connected by gearing n<1>s', which is actuated when the lever v, which rotates the trunnion l, comes in contact with either of the stops v<1> on the connecting-link s'. To vary the rate of expansion, the trunnion l is stationary and is provided with an internal rotating sleeve w having ports x, x and a projecting portion y adjoining each port x, Fig. 5. The projections y form an adjustable cut-off device relatively to the port o. Within the sleeve w is a hollow plug z having ports z', z<2> for the purpose of reversing. The hollow plug z is connected to the lever v, Fig. 6, and the sleeve w to a quadrant v<2> having stops w<1> and an arm w<2> carried by the lever v. The reversing-lever when moved, carries the sleeve w with it, but this sleeve may be independently moved backwards by a lever f. A space q is provided on each side of the abutment. Two or more vanes f, abutments c, and sets of exhaust ports may be provided. drum is built up from dished plates. Fig. 1 illustrates the first method, showing the drum 1 as turned down, and flanges 5, 6. Fig. 2, illustrates the second method.
