Cigarettes or similar rod-like articles, such as cigars or filter rods, fed axially from a cutting station 1 along a V-grooved guide 2 to grooves 4 in a rotary drum 6 and subsequently deposited alternately in two rows 3, 3 on a conveyor belt 37 are braked in the grooves and then brought pneumatically to positions corresponding to the rows. As shown, each groove has a suction braking duct 14 and a suction positioning duct 16, the arrangement being such that a cigarette is brought to rest over a duct 14 and then drawn back by suction in a duct 16 until it comes to rest just overlying the duct 16, as shown in the lower part of the figure. The application of suction to the ducts is controlled by valving means constituted by engagement of the end of the drum with arcuate grooves 18, 36 in a fixed end plate 23, the groove 18 being formed in a ring 19 which is adjustably secured to the plate. A fixed cover 7 surrounds that part of the drum over which the suction operations take place so that cigarettes are sucked into the grooves from the guide 2; they may be assisted by an eccentric disc (not shown). A small degree of suction may be applied to the ducts 16 to provide preliminary braking. The positioning of a cigarette, after interruption of the suction in the duct 14 and application of full suction in the duct 16, may be assisted by compressed air directed along the groove 4 by a nozzle (not shown) in the plate 23. Modifications include the following features; cigarettes encounter the braking ducts first and are then moved on to the positioning ducts, a series of holes spaced along each groove takes the place of the single braking duct and the cover 7 is perforated over the braking area, and braking is effected by a spring blade instead of by suction.
