Abstract

1,264,122. Dyeing with polymerizable dyes. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 16 April, 1969 [17 April, 1968], No. 18122/68. Heading C3P. [Also in Division D1] Fibrous materials or polymeric films are dyed by treating in a dyebath containing an aqueous solution or suspension of a dyestuff of the azo, anthraquinone, nitro, triarylmethane or methine series containing at least one group of the Formula I: in which X is an oxygen atom or a group -NR- in which R is a hydrogen atom or a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, aryl or aralkyl radical and R 1 , R 2 and R 3 each independently represent hydrogen or a methyl group, and subsequently treating the fibrous material or polymeric film in the same dyebath with a polymerization initiator, preferably 1-500% by weight based on the weight of dyestuff being used, redox initiator systems may be employed as may X-ray, gamma-ray and electron beam sources. Substrates dyed include wool, silk, cotton, cellulose acetate, polyamides, viscose rayon, aromatic polyesters, polyacrylonitrile, modified polyacrylonitrile, polyurethane and polyvinyl materials. The dyes may contain one or more water-solubilizing groups, preferably sulphonic acid groups and are especially useful for dyeing natural or synthetic polyamides.
