Abstract

1,268,197. Dyeing with polymerisable dyes. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 16 April, 1969 [17 April, 1968], No. 18106/68. Heading D1B. [Also in Divisions C2 and C3] Fibrous materials or polymeric films are coloured by treating them with a solution or suspension of a dyestuff of the azo, anthraquinone, di- or tri-arylmethane, nitro, methine, xanthene, azine, oxazine or thiazine series which contains one or more groups (preferably 1 or 2) of the formula I: in which R 1 R 2 and R 3 each independantly represents a halogen or hydrogen atom hydroxyl group or optionally substituted alkyl, optionally substituted aryl, cycloalkyl, optionally substituted aryloxy, optionally substituted arylthio, optionally substituted alkoxy, acyloxy, nitro, cyano, carboxylic acid or carboxylic acid ester group and X which is attached directly to a carbon atom forming part of an aryl or alkyl residue present in the dyestuff is a linkage of formula -S-, -SO-, -SCH 2 -, -SO 2 CH 2 -, -SOCH 2 -, -CO-, -CS-, -SOCO-, -S-CO-, -SO 2 NRCO-, -SO 2 NR-, or SO 2 NRCH 2 - in which R is hydrogen or an optionally substituted alkyl, or optionally substituted aryl radical, in conjunction with a free radical generator which is preferably used as 1% - 500% by weight based on the weight of the dyestuff. Preferably the dye contains one or more groups -X-CH=CH 2 and has one or more sulphonic acid groups. Substrates treated include, cotton, viscose and cuprammonium rayon, cellulose acetate, wool, silk, synthetic polyamides, aromatic polyesters, optionally modified polyacrylonitrile and polyurethanes. The polymerisation initiator may be applied before, with or after the dyestuff, but is preferably applied after the dyestuff or together with it followed by a heat treatment e.g. steaming. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,046,751.
