Abstract

1,235,289. Dyeing with polymerisable phthalocyanine dyes. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 25 Nov., 1968 [28 Nov., 1967], No. 54126/67. Heading D1B. [Also in Divisions C3 and C4] Dyeings or printings are obtained using phthalocyanine dyestuffs containing at least one group of the formula wherein R 1 and R 2 each represents H, halogen, alkyl, aryl or aralkyl and R 3 represents H, halogen, alkyl, aryl, aralkyl or a carboxylic acid or carboxylic ester group, by homopolymerising the dyestuff, or copolymerising the dyestuff with another coloured monomer which contains one or more polymerisable olefinic groups, in situ on a textile material or polymeric film. The dyeings or printings are fast to wet-treatments and solvent-treatments. The dyestuffs used are preferably derived from copper phthalocyanine. To effect polymerisation, a free radical polymerisation initiator is applied after, or simultaneously with, the dyestuff, and the initiator is activated by heat, steam or other treatment of the substrate material. Instead of using a chemical initiator, the substrate material can be exposed to radiation, e.g. UV, X-ray, gamma ray or electron beam radiation. The treatment of the material with the dyestuff monomers can be effected by suitable modification of conventional dyeing, padding or printing processes. Suitable textile materials which can be treated include those comprising cotton, regenerated cellulose such as viscose rayon, wool, silk, cellulose acetate, polyurethanes, polyolefins polyamides (e.g. nylon), polyacrylonitrile, modified poly acrylonitrile or aromatic polyester (e.g. polyethylene terephthalate) fibres; the materials may be in the form of loose fibre, slubbing, yarn or piece goods. Polymeric films which can be treated include those of polyester, polyamide, polyimide, polyurethane, polyvinyl materials and polyolefins.
