Abstract

1,262,073. Power driven tool. GKN SCREWS & FASTENERS Ltd. and PLESSEY CO. Ltd. 1 July, 1969 [4 April, 1968; 18 Feb., 1969; 21 March, 1969], Nos. 16216/68, 8655/69 and 14847/69. Heading B4C. [Also in Division B3] A power-driven hand held screwdriver or nut runner, comprises a working element 10 Fig. 1, connected by a torque-limiting clutch 12 to a rotatable part 13 of a circulating-ball jack, and also to an anvil 9 actuated by an impact member 6, members 6 and 13 being actuated by gas produced by an explosive charge. The charge may be a liquid mono fuel such as isopropyl nitrate, or it may be in the form of a cartridge or caseless charge. In operation, with member 6 at the left hand end of its stroke, so that a projection 6b closes a breech 17a, a pump 4 is operated to deliver monofuel from a reservoir 3 to a chamber 17, and breech 17a. A first trigger 20 is operated to release a catch 21, and a firing pin 18 enters breech 17a. The fuel explodes, moves pin 18 to the left where it is cocked, and moves impact member 6 to the right so that gas flows into a cylinder 5. Member 6 compresses a spring 7, and stem 8 delivers an impact to anvil 9. A valve 22 is opened by a second trigger 22a, and gas flows along a groove 5a, through valve 22 into a cylinder 15, whereupon a non-rotary piston 14 is moved to the right, thus causing rotation of the part 13 of the ball jack. Element 10, is now rotated by clutch 12. In a modification, a manual pump 53, Fig. 3, is provided to pump'the monofuel from reservoir 52 to a decomposition chamber 54. Anvil 57 has a shoulder 80 and a splined portion 81 slidable in a clutch portion 82, the mating clutch portion 85 being carried in a rotatable member 86. Detents 112 and 108 are provided for the anvil 57 and impact member 56. The explosion may be started by means of a spark instead of by detonation. The gases may cause impact before or after rotation of working element 10, or a single explosion could cause simultaneous rotation and a series of impacts.
