Abstract

1,261,753. Casting under gas pressure. INSTITUT PO METALOZNANIE I TECHNOLOGIA NA METALITE. 27 March, 1969 [5 April, 1968], No. 16239/69. Heading B5A. [Also in Division B3] In order to prevent evaporation or dissociation during melting and casting, the melting of material to be cast, or of its constituents if it is, for example, an alloy, and the pouring and solidification, are carried out in an atmosphere of gas at a pressure above the vapour pressure of the material or each of its constituents which would otherwise evaporate or dissociate at the operating temperatures. The gas pressure is maintained over any remaining melt to be cast whilst the cast material is brought to atmospheric pressure to permit its removal. The material to be cast may be chemically active, in which case a neutral or reducing gas is used. In the embodiment shown, the solid material or its constituents are melted in a crucible 1, possibly protected by a flux layer, by a heater 2, in a sealed chamber 3 in which the pressure is raised by gas from a reservoir 6 through valves 7 and 8. During this time, a mould 11 in a chamber 10 is exposed to atmospheric pressure because a valve 12 is open. Then the valve.12 is closed and a valve 9 is opened and the chambers 3 and 10 are exposed to a pressure high enough to keep the melt liquid and stable. A closure device 5 is then opened and the pressure in chamber 3 is increased to raise melt into the mould 11. The gas pressure for the melt may be applied to the crucible alone and not to the heater 2 and chamber 3. In another embodiment, Figs. 2, 3 (not shown), instead of using a pressure differential to get the melt into the mould, the apparatus is tiltable to get the crucible above the mould for pouring. In a further embodiment, melt is raised by gas pressure, as in Fig. 1, but into a cylinder (13) from which a piston (14) forces it into the mould located to one side. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 989,353.
