Abstract

1,260,884. Tobacco smoke filters. R. J. REYNOLDS TOBACCO CO. 17 June, 1969 [19 June, 1968], No. 30540/69. Heading A2C. [Also in Division Dl] Cigarette filter rod consisting of bonded fibres e.g. of cellulose acetate, is made from a mixture comprising 75 to 95% by weight of fibres salvaged from rejected filters and 25 to 5% of fibres_that are at least twice the length of the salvaged fibres. Rejected filters are shredded and the paper cover material separated after which the fibres are blended in a mixer with the longer fibres and then processed by a picker machine into a mat about 40" wide and 2" thick. This mat is reduced to #" thickness in a carding machine and then formed into a cylindrical rope of #" diameter in a trumpet-shaped guide. A plasticizer such as triethyl citrate, dimethyl phthalate, diethoxyethyl phthalate &c is added either before or after the formation of the rope which is then formed into rod of 7.65mm diameter by passage through grooved rollers which may have steam injection apertures to activate the plasticizer and reactivate residual plasticizer in the salvaged fibres. The rod is then cured in a stream of cooling air or wrapped in paper and allowed to cure slowly at room temperature.
