Abstract
1,149,115. Tobacco smoke filters. CHISSO CORP. 24 Feb., 1967 [24 Feb., 1966], No. 8958/67. Heading A2C. [Also in Division D1] A tobacco smoke filter comprises a core formed of split fibres of an oriented linear high molecular weight material, the split fibres having a network structure, more than 50% of the split fibres having a denier of 2 to 20, the split fibres being bundled into cyindrical rod like form and the core being enclosed in an outer wrapper. Orientation of the high molecular weight material is effected by stretching a film of the material, with the aid of heat if necessary, prior to splitting. The splitting is effected by means of a coarsely abrasive cutting surface such as a rotating file or tap-like cutter, or less preferably a rotating wire brush or wire cloth cutter. The preferred film materials are polypropylene and cellulose acetate; also specified are polyethylene, polyesters, polyamides, polyvinylacetate, polyacrylonitrile, and regenerated cellulose. Crimped fibres may be produced either from the fibres by conventional crimping apparatus or by forming a film having different coagulation velocities at its two surfaces and treating the surface with the faster coagulation velocity with the coarsely abrasive surface. Optionally the fibres may be sprayed with a binding agent prior to forming into a rod.
