A cigarette filter segment 9 of substantially parallel and preferably plasticized cellulose ester filaments abuts a segment 6 of fibrous layers of mechanically torn paper sheet containing from 10% to 60% by weight of activated charcoal particles having a granulation mostly within the range of 80 to 325 mesh (Tyler Standard Sieve size) and held by the paper fibres, the paper weighing not more than about 30 grams per square metre in the flat state. There may be a further segment of absorbent material, e.g. paper, between the segment 6 and the tobacco 7. The segments may be of equal length or the segment 6 twice as long as the others. The charcoal is added during paper manufacture. The cellulose ester plasticizer may be triacetin, triporopionin, acetyl triethyl citrate, dibutyl phthalate, dimethoxyethyl phthalate or methylphthalylethyl glycolate, and effects localized adhesion between the filaments on storage or heating after they have been formed from a tow into a wrapped rod. The cellulose ester may be an acetate, acetate-butyrate, propionate, acetate-propionate or butyrate. Cigarettes 10 are formed by cutting paper-wrapped rods of the respective filter materials into double-length segments, forming a line of alternate one of these segments into a rod using a paper wrapper 5, subdividing the rod through the double length segments 6 to form double-length filter assemblies and incorporating these and alternate tobacco charges 7 into a continuous rod with a wrapper 8 for subdivision through the double length segments 9 and charges 7 into the cigarettes.
