Abstract
1,260,873. Magnetic recording medium. FUJI PHOTO FILM CO. Ltd. 12 June, 1969 [23 Oct., 1968], No. 29912/69. Heading H1H. In a magnetic recording medium comprising a substrate bearing a magnetic layer containing magnetic particles dispersed in a binder the magnetic layer is provided with a coating containing a powder of at least one non-ferromagnetic material of hardness at least 5 (Moh scale) dispersed in a binder, the powder having a maximum dimension of not more than 5 Á. Specified non-ferromagnetic materials are alumina, carborundum (SiC), chromic oxide (Cr 2 O 3 ), quartz (SiO 2 , haematite (Fe 2 O 3 ), cassiterite (SnO 2 ), rutile (TiO 2 ), psilomelane (BaMnO 2 ), graphite lead dioxide and garnet R 3 <SP>11</SP>R 2 <SP>111</SP>(SiO 4 ) 3 . Where R<SP>11</SP> is Ca, Mg, Fe<SP>11</SP> or Mn and R<SP>111</SP> is Al, Fe<SP>111</SP>, Cr or Ti. The magnetic layer is preferably porous. In examples, magnetic iron oxide dispersions in polymer solutions are applied to plastics tapes or aluminum or plastics discs or cards and then coated with dispersions in polymer solutions of the above non-ferromagnetic materials. Many thermoplastic and thermosetting polymers are specified.
