Abstract

1277822 Magnetic recording medium BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 21 Oct 1969 [22 Oct 1968] 51470/69 Heading H1H In a magnetic recording medium comprising a non-magnetic support bearing a magnetic layer comprising a dispersion of magnetic pigment particles in a binder, the magnetic layer contains 0À1-6% by wt. based on the wt. of magnetic pigment, of non-magnetic particles having a Moh hardness greater than that of the pigment, and an average particle size larger than that of the magnetic pigment particles. Specified magnetic pigments are chromium dioxide, alloys of Fe, Co and/or Ni, and gamma-iron (III) oxide of rod- or cube-shape and particle size 0À1-2 Á. The non-magnetic, abrasive particles generally have a Moh hardness of at least 6 and a particle size of 0À9-9 Á. Specified materials are alumina, corundum, silicon dioxide, quartz, boron carbide, chromium trioxide and hematite. Many polymeric binders are specified. In examples, magnetic layers containing abrasive particles are applied to aluminium discs and polyester films.
