Abstract

1,190,417. Magnetic structures. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. 26 July, 1967 [27 July, 1966], No. 34314/67. Heading H1H. A magnetic recording media comprises a dispersion of ferromagnetic particles in a binder on a base, the binder being a block copolymer of butadiene and styrene and/or α-methylstyrene which has at least 3 blocks and has styrene or methylstyrene blocks at its ends. The copolymer preferably contains 60-95% butadiene and 5-25% methylstyrene or 10- 40% styrene, and may have 3,5,7, or 9 blocks. The ferromagnetic particles, e.g. acicular γ- Fe 2 O 3 , may be dispersed in a solution of the copolymer in tetrahydrofuran, toluene, butyl acetate, or mixtures thereof, in a ball mill. The mixture may include dispersing agents, lubricants, and antistatics, e.g. stearic acid, linseed oil fatty acid, modified rosin, and oleic acid. The dispersion is then applied to the base and dried at 70-150‹ C. The base may be a sheet, tape, or wire, of p.v.c., polyethylene terephthalate, cellulose triacetate, paper, or metal, and may have an intermediate layer of a vinylidene chloride-acrylonitrile copolymer or polyester.
