Abstract

1,132,956. Magnetic compositions. AMPEX CORP. 20 May, 1966 [24 May, 1965], No. 22677/66. Heading H1H. The binder for coating magnetic particles on a backing comprises a vinyl acetate-vinyl chloride copolymer mixed with a polyurethane. The copolymer may constitute 10-77À5% of the binder, and may contain 91% chloride, 3% acetate, and 6% alcohol. The polyurethane may be obtained by reacting 2,4-toluene-, hexamethylene-, or p-p<SP>1</SP>-diphenylmethane-diisocy - anate with adipic or phthalic acid and glycerin, hexanetriol, or butanediol-1,4. The coating may contain 70-80% b.w. magnetic particles. In the examples, Fe oxide is dispersed in solvents and combined with the resins solution in a ball mill; the mixture is then coated on to a polyester base and dried at 175‹ and 225‹ F.
